Strong communities and strong workforces begin with strong literacy skills. At Literacy DuPage, we see every day how access to English and literacy education helps adults support their families, advance at work, and fully participate in our local economy.
Resources & Reports
Who We Serve
Literacy DuPage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing free, personalized, one-to-one tutoring to adults in DuPage County who are building basic English skills or reading below a ninth-grade level.
Many of the adults we serve are parents, employees, and essential workers facing barriers such as demanding work schedules, limited transportation, or childcare needs.
Sixty-two percent of our learners have post-secondary education from their home countries, but lack the English-language skills needed to secure equivalent jobs in the U.S. They are highly motivated to improve their lives.
“I just celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the first student I tutored. We kept in touch. I worked with him on passing TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and then his GRE to get into graduate school at University of Illinois Chicago. Today he is a licensed architect working in Chicago and has designed buildings in Saudi Arabia, Jamaica, Israel, Kazakhstan and the U.S.”
The Need in DuPage County
The need in our community is significant:
54,309 adults do not have a high school diploma.
88,836 individuals speak English “less than well”.
70,756 residents live in poverty (poverty threshold for a family of four is $31,200).
Without support, low literacy limits employment opportunities, reduces economic stability, and perpetuates cycles of poverty across generations. When adults gain literacy skills, the impact extends beyond the individual—to families, workplaces, and the broader community.
Impact
With the support of trained volunteer tutors, Literacy DuPage serves more than 275 adult learners each year.
Learners build practical skills that help them:
Communicate confidently at work
Navigate healthcare and emergency situations
Support their children’s education
Pursue better employment opportunities
Our one-to-one tutoring model ensures instruction is tailored to each learner’s goals, making the program both effective and cost-efficient.

“I tutored with Literacy DuPage in 2008, and my learner had three young children at the time. Her goals were simple but powerful—to communicate with her children’s teachers, earn her driver’s license, and find a job.
Today, she works as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Her children are now adults, all college graduates, and working as a speech therapist, a highway patrolman, and a construction manager. Recently, I even had the joy of attending her daughter’s wedding.
Seeing how far one family has come reminds me why adult literacy matters—and how it can change generations.”
